Ewart Uncles Ceramic Lamp with Custom Shade490€

Table lamp by Ewart Uncles, a British studio potter who moved to France in the mid-20th century. Uncles trained in Britain during the post-war period, part of the generation influenced by Bernard Leach and the Anglo–Japanese approach to ceramics, before establishing his career in France where he developed a quieter, more personal language in clay. His work combines the rigour of wheel-thrown pottery with an interest in form as sculpture, and he often produced functional objects such as lamps, vases and bowls that balanced utility with strong material presence.

This lamp, dating from the 1960s–70s, is a fine example of his restrained aesthetic. The base is wheel-thrown stoneware with a warm brown glaze, its surface showing the circular rhythm of the potter’s wheel. The shape, wide at the bottom and tapering towards the neck, gives the piece a stable, grounded quality. It has been rewired to modern standards and completed with a new custom shade in Italian linen and silk, produced by Maison Gazelles in Brussels. The shade was made entirely by hand, its geometric weave chosen to echo the era of the lamp while adding a contemporary clarity.
